A literary movement has been swirling for a long time, and has picked up significantly within the last 10 years.

"While the miles passed, the sky over Elspeth became nothing but a gray smudge and weighty clouds released their burdenAs soon as a drop of sweat slid out from under a glove or down a curl of hair, it turned to ice that flickered in the last of the light."

"The Kept" follows that image to the discovery of a murdered family and the boy's double quest for maturity and retribution.
One of Caleb's teachers is a bouncer and hit man named Ethan, who tells him about a bounty hunter named Ramus who'd been hired to track his client's kidnapped wife. Thing is, the killer found the wife "in the lying down game with another man."
So, now we come to the subject of this review, James Scott's debut novel, "The Kept," which casts the Great Lakes landscape of New York in the bleeding colors and soul baring rawness of Southern Gothic.
One of its deep sources is Flannery O'Connor, who gave exquisite expression to the mythologizing psychology of tormented souls, using a style we call Southern Gothic.
"Elspeth Howell was a sinner," the novel begins, as she trudges through snow from the town where she had spent a few months as a midwife, heading to her family's cabin, so remote that intruders did not arrive by accident.
"Not only the subject matter, but more than that, the empathy toward characters who can do awful things good characters do bad things; bad characters do good things, and there's a depth to that. In second and third grades he was writing stories about the Wright brothers, Mashed Potato Land and President McKinley's assassination (his mother, Kathryn Strayer, was from Canton, Ohio, home of the McKinley museum).
You can feel the cold in your breathing passages as Elspeth's memories latch onto her during her trek; and as she finally comes in view of a house devoid of signs of life.
And what a town it is. Scott has got himself a place like Pete Dexter's Deadwood to test such themes as conscience and judgment; the nature of parental bonds, including non biological ones; and the ability of people to break through the strictures of their hardened selves.
But Elspeth and Caleb are bereft of much past intimacy and, at any rate, Elspeth is in a feverish bad state, so that flashbacks alternate with survival to make a plot.
Southern Gothic fiction was "a huge influence" on Scott, he said in a recent interview.

Elspeth and Caleb prepare for and set out on a journey to track the murderers. It isn't until 80 pages later that they reach other people; and Elspeth nearly dies doing it.
of a boy wiping snow from his dead little sister's face.
One third through the novel, the protagonists will arrive in the town Watersbridge that will be the setting for most of the rest of the book.
Only Caleb, the 12 year old, who liked to stay with the animals in the barn, is unaccounted for.
It's the mid 1890s. The industries in Watersbridge are an ice lake and factory; a gambling and prostitution saloon; a mercantile store run by a Jewish couple; and a hotel over which a moral character presides.
Her 5 year old girl is at the threshold, lying in snow; her older daughter, shot, leans over the stove; one son is dead in the main room, and another had been killed on the way to his father, who lies dead in bed.
It's difficult to write about this book because it involves so many reveals, including Elspeth's discovery of Caleb; but since that's mentioned on the book flap, I will proceed.
by the democracy of late 20th century education. He cites O'Connor as an inspiration, and McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" as a favorite book.
