It is a sign both of Steve's standing in the game and how much he had touched and inspired those around him that the England national team broke off from preparing for Saturday's Wembley semi final to attend en bloc. The Wigan contingent among them Sam Tomkins, Sean O'Loughlin and Liam Farrell opted to stand outside with the fans rather than push their way through to seats that had been reserved for them.
For all the courageous and inspirational work Steve did in the seven years battling cancer, mourners at Monday's funeral were reminded of his talent as a brave, pacy and entertaining attacking full back.
After the service England coach Steve McNamara recalled how he and Steve travelled together from Hull after Steve joined him at Wakefield in 2000.
"Steve scored two tries but always said he should have a had a hat trick. There is a row down there of some of the lads from 96 here today.

Saints were well represented with chairman Eamonn McManus, CEO Mike Rush, Kel Coslett and coaches Nathan Brown and Keiron Cunningham joined by the whole first team squad, who filed in after early morning training.
In recent years Steve had got his teeth into his work in assisting the academy coaching staff at Saints and then Rochdale.
He summed Steve up simply: "He was a great lad."
"It was ironic because during our time there the club went bankrupt and Steve went back to Hull. He was a really good bloke and it's a pleasure to have known him."

ARMS aloft and triumphant one of the full length posters behind the church altar encapsulated Steve Prescott's finest hour as a player at the 1996 Challenge Cup Final.
Ian Talbot, Steve Leonard, Neil Kilshaw and Derek Traynor were among his many former colleagues in church.
He touched the lives of all in the 13 man code and Monday's exemplary turnout from players, coaches and fans underlined just how well liked and respected he was throughout the game and how much he will be missed.
He said: "When you look back on 1996 at Wembley did it get any better than that for Steve Prescott as a player or for us as fans?
Some of the game's best modern number ones, players and friends who shared a mutual respect with Steve, were in attendance too Paul Wellens, Gary Connolly and Kris Radlinski. Shaun Briscoe, who took Steve's place at Hull in 2004, was one of Polo Ralph Lauren Shoes Kids
And of course, Steve Crooks, one of his coaches during his first stint at Hull but more importantly the man who helped pick Steve up and show him the start line after first being diagnosed with cancer in September 2006 was present.
Eric Hughes, the coach who helped nurture Steve and those other young lads and effectively deliver the double winning team to McRae in 1996 and Andy Kelly, who coached Steve at both Wakefield and Ireland during the World Cup in 2000, were also among the gathering at St Mary's Lowe House.
Even when he was on his hospital bed, waiting for surgery, Steve was still thinking about rugby, sending a motivational speech to the young Rochdale lads ahead of their Championship Grand Final victory in September.
Reading the eulogy Mike Denning urged people gathered to keep memories of Steve's playing days alive.
Among the 2,000 strong congregation were several of the former coaches who had guided Steve at various points of his career. They included Eric Chisnall, who first stopped Steve in the street as a teenager to Lacoste New Shoes

Lee Radford had travelled over, with former Black and White colleagues Paul Cooke, Chris Chester and Kirk Yeaman taking their place outside once the church reached capacity.
That class of '96 was the first Saints team to win the cup in 20 years; a special team that heralded the start of a glorious summer era for St Helens and Steve's was the first name on that teamsheet.
Also present was former A team coach Frank Barrow, the man who went as far as offering to put his own money on the table to persuade an initially reluctant Saints board to sign a then skinny 18 year old.
Many members of Shaun McRae's ground breaking, double winning team were in attendance to pay their last respects including Danny Arnold, Tommy Martyn, Bobbie Goulding, Chris Joynt, Vila Matautia and Andy Northey.
